Lot 583
1806 Br-2, Rarity 2. PCGS graded MS-64. Well struck for an early Draped Bust quarter and an issue which is rarely found in grades even approaching the gem level. The obverse and reverse have a pleasing light sliver-gray hue and are nicely toned. The surfaces are quite stunning, with nary a nick or mark to be found, and the strike is fairly sharp. This is the later die state for this die pairing, with considerable rim crumbling along the tops of the legends, and a bisecting die crack through the final A of AMERICA to the O in OF. A tough type coin to find this well preserved! Don't miss out. Pop 10; 5 finer, 2 in 64+, 3 in 65. (PCGS # 5314) Estimated Value $20,000 - UP

Well balanced and pleasing for this early date quarter. Pop 2; 4 finer for the variety, 3 in 53, 1 in 65. (PCGS # 38976) Estimated Value $1,200 - 1,300

1836. B-2, Rarity 2. PCGS graded AU-55. Nice blue and golden toning with russet accents deepening to blue around the devices. Sharply struck throughout, with minimal surface marks from brief circulation. Interesting light die cracks bisect the obverse vertically and a similar crack on the reverse. Scarce this nice for the date and variety, this one is highly appealing and worth a solid bid. Housed in a PCGS 30th Anniversary Green Holder. Pop 2; 2 finer, 1 in 58+, 1 in 64. (PCGS # 39006) Estimated Value $500 - 550

1838. Browning 1, Rarity 1. PCGS graded MS-64. Nice peripherial blue and gold tone on the obverse, the reverse more steel gray with a tinge of gold. The devices are all boldly struck on this final year of issue of the Capped Bust design. The surfaces are satin smooth and most attractive when examined. Pop 3; 2 finer, 1 in 65, 1 in 66. 1853. Arrows and rays. PCGS graded MS-65. Well struck with nice even toning on both sides with several tiny bright flecks shining through with the original frosty surface. A prize for the collector who demands high quality and bold visual appeal, as not many have retained the gem grade level. An important type coin with the Arrows and Rays to announce the decreased silver content in the planchet as needed and authorized in that year. A popular type coin. Pop 20; 16 finer, 4 in 65+, 9 in 66, 3 in 67. (PCGS # 5426) Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000

1857. NGC graded MS-67. Light rainbow and russet toning around the edges of both sides with the centers bright white and frosty. Boldly struck on all the devices and stars. What is really amazing here, not that the prior attributes should be overlooked, is the incredible quality of th surfaces. They are virtually free of all but the most minute signs of handling. Booming visual appeal and a treat for the eyes to indulge. Pop 16; 4 finer at NGC. Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,800

1873. Arrows. PCGS graded Proof 65. Both the obverse and particularly the reverse offer fiery rose-gold toning from the depths of the darker toning shades that comes alive in when viewed under a light. While subtle in hand, the depth and intensity of the toning is easily brought forth. Highly reflective fields and boldly struck. Only 540 minted. Pop 14; 13 finer at PCGS. 1877. NGC graded MS-67+ Star. Fully white with strong mint frost on the devices and well struck, however, the stars are somewhat flat. The fields are reflective on both sides which further offsets the glittering icy mint frost of the devices. Outstanding quality in terms of preservation, and a coin with considerable dramatic eye appeal. Pop 1; 9 finer in 68. Estimated Value $4,000 - UP

1878-S. PCGS graded MS-64. Lightly toned with delicate golden accents on both sides, well balanced, well struck and frosty on the reverse. A scarce date in Mint State. One of the finer examples of this date and mint known, with precious few this nice and just a topped by five others. Pop 10; 5 finer, 2 in 65, 1 in 65+, 2 in 66. 1893-S. PCGS graded MS-65. Lovely light rainbow toning on both sides with greenish lemon iridescence through the stars and legends, the reverse matching and elegant in appearance. The devices are all boldly struck, and as usual the Mintmark from San Francisco is way off to the right under the eagle's tail as always seen this particular year. A key issue from this first year of the Barber coinage that never goes out of style. Pop 10; 8 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 5606) Estimated Value $3,000 - 3,200

Lot 596
1896-S. PCGS graded MS-64. Well struck and fully white with abundant mint frost on the devices and the fields show some reflectivity. The surfaces show a few trivial bagmarks from handling, and there are light signs of clashing within Liberty's ear from the reverse horizontal shield lines. A key date that is rarely found at all, especially so in high grades like this, as a mere 188,039 pieces were struck for the entire year. Popular key date, and this is one of the big three of the Barber quarter series--the 1896-S, 1901-S and 1913-S. An exceptional coin and worthy of a strong bid. Pop 12; 13 finer, 7 in 65, 3 in 65+, 3 in 66. (PCGS # 5615) Estimated Value $17,000 - 18,000

Wonderfully original and probably held in the same paper envelope for 100 or so years. Only 813 struck. Pop 11; 31 finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 5687) Estimated Value $2,500 - UP

1913-D. NGC graded MS-67. A hint of light tone that offers classic elegance with delicate golden gray on the obverse, the reverse with a touch of lemon and rose gold. The coins from the Eliasberg Collection were first purchased by J.M. Clapp until his death in 1906, then continued by his son John H Clapp, both who bought many directly from the Mints as they were issued, such as this lovely 1913 Denver Quarter dollar. They were known for demanding quality and the Mints did their best to serve them the absolutely finest coins produced each year. In 1942 the New York numismatic firm of Stack's brokered the entire Clapp Collection to Louis Eliasberg for what seemed an inconceivable sum, and some 55 years later the silver and copper coins cons brought unbelievable prices, as did the gold coins, even though the gold coins were sold in 1982 years earlier. Pop 2; tied for the finest examples graded at both services. Estimated Value $4,500 - 5,000

1916. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Head. Well struck and untoned with vibrant original luster on both sides. Popular key date. Only 52,000 struck for this first year of issue, and these slipped into circulation generally unnoticed, hence the tiny numbers that survive in gem or finer grades. This elegant design was created by famed sculptor Hermon A. MacNeil. Liberty is depicted as walking directly toward the viewer, coming through a garden gate with walls surrounding. She holds an olive branch in her right hand, and her shield in her left. Her right breast is exposed as her drapery is extended by her hand holding the olive branch. This artistic revelation was just too much for some members of the public and Congress, who soon demanded that she be fully clothed. In late 1917 the design was changed to keep certain members of the public appeased. Times never change. Pop 85; 35 finer at PCGS for MSFH. (PCGS # 5705) Estimated Value $27,000 - UP

1916. PCGS graded MS-64 Full Head. Lovely gold toning on both sides. Popular key date with a modest mintage of 52,000 pieces, most of which entered circulation unnoticed and without any fanfare. Most people and collectors thought these were first issued in 1917 when the initial batches were given out to banks, but inside some of the bags were these soon to be rare and sought after 1916 Standing Liberty Quarters. This one offers a bold strike with a full head on Liberty and all the bosses or rivets in the shield, and glorious mint luster throughout. The toning is deeper russet with touches of blue and green around the rims, particularly on the reverse. An elegant example of this sought after key date! (PCGS # 5705) Estimated Value $20,000 - 22,000

1916. NGC graded AU-58. Evenly toned with classic deep russet around the rims, lighter golden gray to the centers over luster. This is the popular key date with a tiny mintage of only 52,000 pieces late in 1916. These were somewhat of surprise to collectors, as production was supposed to begin in 1917, and when the 1917 quarters were released, these 1916 quarters were found inside the bags. Thus few were saved most entered circulation unnoticed. Estimated Value $8,000 - 8,500
